Tennessee Titans key moments in loss to Los Angeles Chargers
The Tennessee Titans again faltered in the second half, losing 27-17 to the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday at SoFi Stadium.
Tennessee cut the LA lead to 13-10 in the third quarter, but the Chargers offense scored touchdowns on back-to-back drives while the defense disrupted Will Levis' rhythm to the tune of seven sacks.
Levis finished 18-of-23 for 175 yards and two touchdowns, but the Chargers pass rush impacted the game at the right times.
Here are three key moments in Sunday's Titans win/loss:
Scenario: Chargers held onto 13-7 lead into halftime after overturned fumble return TD
This will be a tough one to stomach for Jeffery Simmons, Roger McCreary and the Titans defense. Simmons apparently stripped Justin Herbert of the football in the final minute of the first half, and Roger McCreary recovered the loose ball and returned it for a touchdown. Fumble, recovery and touchdown was the initial ruling on the field. But replay review overturned the fumble, ruling it an incomplete pass.
Herbert's hand was judged to move the ball forward though his arm wasn't immediately going forward due to the very large arm of Simmons hitting it. Indisputable? Tough to tell. Either way, the Titans went into halftime down 13-7 instead of ahead 13-13.
Scenario: Chargers 13, Titans 10 with 7:51 left in the third quarter
In the scope of things, there were bigger plays. But the Titans offense had to settle for a short Nick Folk field goal after an 11-play, 63-yard drive. Will Levis' third down jump ball to Josh Whyle wasn't really close, and the Titans were resigned to cutting the Chargers' lead to 13-10. It was the last time the Titans offense had the ball in a one-score game.
Scenario: Chargers 20, Titans 10 with 3:24 left in third quarter
LA took full control of the game on the next drive. Derius Days returned the kickoff into Titans territory, and the Chargers offense took advantage of the field position. Justin Herbert had all day to find Quentin Johnston open in the end zone for a 16-yard touchdown pass. After the successful PAT, the Chargers took a 20-10 lead late in the third quarter. Tennessee never threated again.
