Jim Harbaugh could be suspended for Chargers' next game too | Marca
He was seen using the same illegal pouches Baker Mayfield used a week ago
Jim Harbaugh was caught on camera using nicotine pouches during the Chargers game against the New Orleans Saints on Sunday.
He's not the first NFL figure to be seen with them as Baker Mayfield was also spotted last week using the same ZYN nicotine pouches.
The NFL is strict about this in its playbook, which states: "Among the types of activity that are prohibited are use of tobacco products (smokeless included) while in the bench area... In addition to the game-day penalties described in this rule, the Commissioner may subsequently impose independent disciplinary action on the club and involved player, up to and including suspension from the team's next game-preseason, regular season, or postseason, whichever is applicable."
ZYN (the brand behind the nicotine pouches Mayfield was seen using) has previously emphasized that its products are intended for adults over 21 and does not market to minors. A ZYN spokesperson told TMZ Sports during Mayfield's controversy: "Swedish Match appreciates its loyal consumers and encourages them not to show the product in any situation where someone under 21 years old could see it, as the product is marketed only to current nicotine consumers 21 years old and over as a better alternative to continued smoking and other traditional tobacco products."
Harbaugh has been taking medication and other steps to manage his long-standing arrhythmia, including wearing a heart monitor for the next two weeks and using a blood thinner to prevent irregular heart rhythms. This may be part of why he's using nicotine pouches.
Still, players shouldn't use nicotine products during games, as many children look up to NFL players and may be tempted to imitate them.
The NFL did not suspend Mayfield last week, and Harbaugh is also unlikely to face suspension this time. However, if this behavior continues, there will almost certainly be consequences.
