Chargers earn ‘A-’ in dominating win over Saints - Bolts From The Blue

The Chargers got big games from Justin Herbert and Ladd McConkey in their 26-8 win over the Saints.

Jim Harbaugh called Sunday a “must-win game” following their 26-8 dominance over the Saints at home. Luckily, the team was able to take care of business by beating a lesser opponent to avoid slipping below .500 on the season.

Justin Herbert followed his high-flying passing performance against the Cardinals with another stellar outing through the air with 279 yards and two touchdowns, both to rookie wideout Ladd McConkey.

The defense was once again stout. They held New Orleans to single digits and have only further cemented themselves as one of the top defenses in the NFL.

All of this combined into a big win at home and a quality game grade from CBS Sports’ John Breech who gave the Chargers an “A-” for their work on Sunday.

Here’s what he had to say:

“The Chargers defense surrendered the fewest points in the NFL through the first seven weeks and that won’t be changing after this impressive performance against New Orleans. Khalil Mack and Bud Dupree led a defensive unit that sacked the Saints a total of five times while also keeping New Orleans out of the end zone. The offense wasn’t pretty, but Justin Herbert did more than enough to carry the Chargers to the win. Ladd McConkey came up with the play of the day when he caught a 60-yard TD from Justin Herbert that essentially iced the win. The Chargers won’t wow you, but they have a strong defense and a steady offense, which is a key to winning games late in the season.”

In my opinion, the Chargers still need to add an additional playmaker at wide receiver but Breech’s optimism about the team’s potential is still nice to hear. The offense sure can take time off the clock, but when they have days where they can’t stay on the field long enough to rest the defense, it really highlights just how little explosiveness that unit has beyond their top-tier players.

But for now, the Chargers have a winning record and that’s something worth celebrating.
