New Orleans Saints defensive tackle Nathan Shepard was fined for his hit on Justin Herbert. Shepard was fined $11,817 for the hit on the Los Angeles Chargers quarterback, the NFL announced on Saturday.
Shepard tackled Herbert during the Chargers’ 26-8 win over the Saints last Sunday. Shepard didn’t let go of Herbert’s right leg, and he twisted Herbert by the knee and pulled the quarterback down long after he threw a pass. Once Herbert was on the ground, Shepherd rolled over and continued to twist Herbert’s knee. It was an ugly play that could have seriously injured Herbert.

Many Los Angeles players accused Shepard of intentionally trying to injure Herbert. Chargers center Bradley Bozeman, who responded by shoving Shepard and droving him into the turf in response, said Shepard’s play “one the dirtier” plays he’s ever seen.

Bozeman was not fined for the play.
New Orleans head coach Dennis Allen defended Shepard against the accusations.
“Here’s a guy that’s trying to wrap the quarterback up. He’s on the ground, he has no idea if the quarterback has the ball or not. He’s just trying to bring the quarterback to the ground,” Allen told reporters on Monday. “There was nothing malicious about that play. It’s a guy that’s trying to make a play. I went back and looked back at that play again after seeing the comments, and I don’t agree with that.”
